In a vague attempt to explain my choice of characters...

Instead of a straight `here-is-the-character-look-at-their-bio` thingy, I hired Spike out to collect the crew's thoughts on each character. Er, in that I gave him a pack of cigarettes and a tape recorder, and told him not to kill anyone if he could help it. Enjoy!
